FOOTBALL: D & SPECIALS TEAMS PROPEL HORNETS PAST MESA

In a Central Division game on Saturday, the Hornets hosted San Diego Mesa College and lit up the scoreboard for a 45-14 win over the Olympians.

The win marks the 27th consecutive victory dating back to 2016. FC is only one short of tying the school record for most consecutive wins set during the 1966-1968 season.

The Hornet defense and special teams proved to be too much for Mesa as five of the seven scores did a great deal of damage.

Fullerton scored their first points on a 27-yard field goal by Alex Moreno at 9:56 in the first quarter.

On Mesa's next drive, Xavion Steele intercepted the ball and scored on a 49-yard return to the end zone.

The Olympians put together a nice drive getting to the Fullerton 15-yardline, but when they went to put up their first points of the game on a 32-yard field goal it was blocked by Troy Lefeged. Jay Brown scooped up the ball slicing and dicing his way in for a touchdown.

Up 17-0 heading into the second quarter, the Hornets did not let up. Quarterback Quinn Commans got in on the action tossing a 36-yard touchdown strike to Jawaun Johnson at 10:42.

Mesa scored their first touchdown on the next drive at 8:27 when Dunninway hit Isaiah Williams from 40-yard out.

The Olympians cut into the Hornet lead on their next possession scoring another TD with 3:25 left in the half. Tyler Tutt took the ball from 28-yards out to paydirt setting the score at 24-14 by halftime.

The Hornets scored again at 7:32 in the third when QB Gresch Jensen struck Tim Allen for a 64-yard TD. FC was up 31-14.

The FC defense forced a three and out and then Donald Hayes did the rest at the 5:15 mark. On the punt return, Hayes let the ball bounce and then snagged it out of the air where he ran the ball back 84 yards for a touchdown.

With a minute left in the third, Fullerton put the final touches on the victory when Xavion Steele struck again for his second pick-six of the game snagging the ball out of the air for an 86-yard return to the house.

Up Next: The Hornets (8-0 overall, 3-0 conference) will play at El Camino College on Saturday, November 3rd for another Central Division matchup. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.
