Sophomore night was extra special for the Chabot women's basketball team as five Gladiators reached double digits in a rousing 80-64 win over College of San Mateo on Feb. 22.
The Gladiators (20-9), guided by head coach Mark Anger, earned the No. 9 seed for the CCCAA Northern California Regionals and will travel to No. 8 Sacramento City on Friday in the semifinal round.
The winner will most likely face No. 1 seed Diablo Valley in the NorCal final Saturday, with a berth in the State Championship at stake.
Chabot, which has won five of six, finished tied for second in the Coast-North with a 9-3 mark. Reaching 20 wins is an important accomplishment for the program.
"20 wins and the playoffs are next. We r just getting started," Anger tweeted out after the win over CSM.
CSM beat Chabot 66-61 on Jan. 30 in the first round of conference play, but Chabot put it away in the rematch with big team efforts in the second and fourth quarters.
Ferrynn Steen played a key role with 15 points and eight rebounds. Mia Finnie had a team-high 16 points. Both Steen and Finnie were a tidy 7 of 10 from the field.
Kim Masulit (14), Angelina Franco (10) and Kendra Jueitt (10) all had solid efforts. Zakiya Mahoney had a versatile effort with nine points, seven assists, four rebounds and a steal.
