Men’s Water Polo Wins Twice in Mt. SAC Mini; Defeats SD Mesa, Oxy

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo Team wrapped up the regular season with two wins and a loss in the Mt. SAC Mini Tournament on Saturday October 27 at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics Complex.

The Mounties fell to Citrus College, 10-8 in the opening game, but came back with wins over San Diego Mesa (15-10) and Occidental (11-8) in the afternoon.

Leading the way in goals in the three games for the Mounties was utility Jarrett Barker (2A, 2 Steals) with eight, followed by utility Jonathan Heredia with seven and attacker Edgar Cueva with five. Attacker Noah Slack (3 A) added six goals.

Cueva led in assists with seven and steals with six, along with Heredia with six thefts, while driver Aidan O'Neill scored three goals, had five assists and four steals in the tourney,

In game one against Citrus, the Owls had a 5-3 lead at the half and held that two-goal lead throughout the game. Barker and Heredia each scored twice in the game to lead the Mounties.

The game two win over Mesa was the biggest scoring output of the tourney for the Mounties, with Slack leading the way with four goals.

Mt. SAC took a 6-1 first-period lead with Slack scoring twice, but Mesa came roaring back with a 5-goal second period to the Mounties one goal. Mt. SAC held a one-goal, 7-6 lead at the half.

Led by a pair of goals by Cueva and solo goals by attacker Jeremiah Hernandez, Heredia and Slack and a stingy Mt. SAC defense that didn't allow a goal in the third period, the Mounties led 12-6 entering the fourth period.

The final period was nearly even as Mesa outscored Mt. SAC, 4-3 but lost by five, 15-10.

In the third and final game of the tournament, the Mounties again took a big lead after one half of play (7-1), led by a pair of goals by Barker.

Oxy scored seven goals in the second half, but the Mounties countered with four and held on for the 11-8 win.

In his two games, goalie Jake Simmons (1-1) made 20 saves, while Andres Madrigal-Mercado (1-0) had 11 in the win over Mesa.

Mt. SAC is scheduled to play El Camino in the opening game of the South Coast Conference Championships on Thursday November 1 at Cerritos College.
