2024-25 3C2A Scholar Awards Announced: Palomar's Mowad; Clovis' Walker Tabbed Scholar-Athletes of the Year
Sacramento, Calif. - Palomar College baseball pitcher Ian Mowad and Clovis Community College women's cross country and track and field four-time state champion Rhiannon Walker were tabbed the 2024-25 3C2A Scholar-Athletes of the Year, announced Monday.
Mowad and Walker represent a group of 22 impressive student-athletes that are being recognized for their excellence in academics, athletics, and citizenship from the 2024-25 academic year. The 20 runners-up for the Scholar-Athlete Award will comprise the Honor Roll, joining the Scholar-Athletes of the Year, as well as the 23 programs selected for the Scholar Team Awards, that will be celebrated during the Scholar-Athlete Luncheon during the annual 3C2A Convention at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank on Wednesday, Apr. 1, presented by Accelerate Sports Ventures. Tickets to the event are available for purchase here.
"Ian and Rhiannon exemplify the excellence recognized by the 3C2A Scholar-Athlete Award," 3C2A Executive Director Jennifer Cardone said. "Their commitment to perform at an elite level in the classroom, in competition, and in service to their communities reflects their hard work and dedication, but more importantly, their character. We proudly congratulate them and look forward to recognizing their achievements at the Scholar-Athlete Luncheon."
Ian Mowad | Palomar | Baseball
Mowad was integral to Palomar's back-to-back 3C2A SoCal Regional Final appearances in 2024 and 2025, starting both contests on the mound that resulted in wins for the Comets in the best-of-three series.
In 2025, the right-handed pitcher started 17 games, putting together an 8-3 record with a 5.44 earned run average and a 1.79 WHIP across 82.2 innings pitched. He allowed only 50 earned runs, while fanning 79, averaging 8.60 strikeouts per nine innings. And in his rookie campaign in 2024, he made 14 appearances, starting 11 contests, posting an 8-2 record with a 4.11 earned run average and a 1.33 WHIP over 70.0 innings pitched. He held his opponents to a .269 batting average, only dishing out 22 walks while striking out 52.
His work on the bump garnered national attention, capturing a 2025 Preseason All-America nod, while also being named to the 2024 All-PCAC First Team.
But while he excelled on the diamond, his commitment to excellence off the field is even more impressive. During his time at Palomar, Mowad maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, accumulated 80 units, and completed three associates degrees. He graduated in May 2025 with an Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer in Law, Public Policy, and Society; Associate in Arts Degree in University Studies with an Emphasis in Social Sciences; and Associate in Arts Degree in General Studies with an Emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
"What makes Ian truly deserve this award is not only his remarkable list of accomplishments, but the way he has earned them with integrity, humility, and tireless dedication," Palomar Community College District Superintendent/President Star Rivera-Lacy said. "He represents the very best of the California Community College student-athlete experience, and his achievements are a direct reflection of his character, discipline, and commitment to excellence."
Additionally, Mowad volunteered his time at local youth baseball camps and clinics mentoring the next generation of student-athletes, while also helping raise awareness and support for important causes such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, and pediatric brain cancer through Palomar baseball's annual charity games.
"Ian is a competitor who lifts his team through his example, a student whose academic pursuits set a high bar for excellence, and a young man whose character reflects positively on our entire institution," Palomar Director of Athletics Daniel Lynds said. "His efforts reflect his selflessness and his desire to use his platform as a student-athlete to make a meaningful and lasting impact beyond the game."
His work on the field and in the classroom earned him additional accolades such as PCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and CCCBCA Academic All-State, but most importantly, he was awarded a scholarship to St. John's University to continue his athletic and academic journey, where he is majoring in Criminal Justice.
Rhiannon Walker | Clovis | Women's Cross Country and Track & Field
Rhiannon Walker rewrote the record books while competing in women's cross country and track and field at Clovis Community College. Her work ethic, coachability, and great energy led her to one of the most successful careers for The Crush, resulting in quite the long resume that includes seven All-America honors, six All-State First Team nods, NorCal Regionals Track MVP, Central Valley Conference Track MVP, and All-CVC for Cross Country just list a few.
Her inaugural year gave just a glimpse of what was to come, as she finished sixth at the 3C2A Cross Country Championships, and after never competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, or clearing a hurdle for that matter, Walker won the 3C2A State Championships in just her third attempt at the race. She then went on to place sixth at the U20 Championships – a national competition against NCAA athletes from all divisions.
But her sophomore year was when the accolades really poured in. Between winning the 3C2A Cross Country title, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and 10,000 meters, she added numerous NorCal Regional and Central Valley Conference titles and runner-up finishes.
"Sometimes, championship races can be stressful for both coaches and athletes," Clovis Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach CJ Albertson said. "While coaching her, that 'stress' was replaced with joy and a sense of peace with whatever the outcome was going to be. Her attitude made it easier to simply enjoy the moment. I believe Rhiannon has made me a better coach and ultimately has left a positive legacy for Clovis Community College Cross Country and Track and Field."
Walker found balance between the course and track with the classroom and in the community, earning a 3.94 GPA as a Physical Education major and being named to the Dean's List for each semester. She was also awarded the Kiwanis 'Torch of Excellence' Chancellor's Award of Distinction for earning a 4.0 GPA for consecutive semesters and Torch of Excellence President's Scholar in 2024 (3.51-4.0 GPA). She graduated Magna Cum Laude in May 2025.
She was also an active member of the University Vineland Christian Church, where she regularly volunteered her time in the nursery as well as working with their video production team. She also partnered with her Crush teammates to support various community initiatives, including a successful holiday toy drive in conjunction with Toys-4-Tots.
"I found Rhiannon to be one of the kindest and most humble student-athletes I've worked with," Clovis Counselor Karie A. Hannigan said." She has so many positive traits that she often shared with our program and community. Rhiannon is a quiet but extremely fierce competitor."
Albertson added, "One of her best qualities in my opinion was not letting the success of running take over her life. Although she was one of the most diligent and consistent athletes I've ever coached, she always kept running in the right perspective relative to the rest of her life. She focused on having good relationships with her teammates and family and stayed involved with her church and community."
Walker continued her academic and athletic career down the road at NCAA Division I Fresno State where she finished 161st out of 263 at the NCAA West Cross Country Regional in Sacramento in November. And in track and field, she has already made her mark, setting the school record for the women's indoor 5,000 meters (17:15.29) in January, besting the previous record by nearly six seconds and ranking in the Top 15 in the Mountain West this season. She plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.
