Mt. San Antonio claims NATYCAA Cup for fifth consecutive year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With state championships in men’s soccer and women’s basketball, as well as five other top-five finishes, Mt. San Antonio College scored 166 points during the 2016-17 athletic year to capture top honors for the fifth straight year in the California Community College Athletic Association standings for the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators all-sports competition.

The Mounties finished first in a race that featured 12 colleges with at least 100 points. It’s their seventh title overall since 2008. Riverside City  College finished second with 155.5 points, Sierra College was the top school from Northern California and was third with 139 and San Joaquin Delta College from Stockton was fourth with 124.5 points.

Orange Coast College (123), Fresno City College (120.5), Cerritos College (118.5), American River (113), Ventura College (108.5) and Diablo Valley College (105.5) round out the top 10. Santa Rosa College (104) and Long Beach City College (102) also eclipsed the 100-point barrier.

The top 12 finishers were divided evenly between Northern California and Southern California region colleges but first place remained the domain of Mt. San Antonio. Besides its two state championships, the Mounties also benefited from runner-up showings in softball and men’s track, third-place finishes in men’s cross country and women’s track, and a fifth-place performance in wrestling.

Riverside and Sierra both matched Mt. San Antonio with a pair of CCCAA Championships apiece. Both of Riverside’s came during the fall when it captured men’s cross country and women’s water polo titles, while the Wolverines won the women’s golf banner in November and then added a women’s swimming and diving championship in May.

A college is awarded points based on its team’s final positions in post-conference competition. Each college’s top-five men’s and top-five women’s team results count toward the school’s overall point total. The CCCAA is also in competition against two-year colleges from throughout the country for overall and state association titles. Mt. San Antonio was second and third, respectively, in the state association division and Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, while Riverside took third and fifth.

NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators and membership is open to all two-year institutions throughout the country. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to recognize and reward overall program excellence at the two-year college level. The criterion for the State Association’s division was developed by the CCCAA in conjunction with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA).
