Mt. San Antonio holds lead in NATYCAA standings after fall season; Sierra and Fresno City are next two
Complete Standings (through Fall 2019)
SACRAMENTO – Mt. San Antonio College didn’t capture any state championships during the fall but strong depth across eight sports, including a trio of top-three finishes, helped push the seven-time defending Mounties to an early lead atop the California Community College Athletic Association race for the 2019-20 all-sports NATYCAA Cup, it was announced on Wednesday.
Mt. SAC earned 114 points during the fall season’s 10 championships and holds a 10.5-point lead against Sierra College (103.5), the top program in Northern California so far this year. Fresno City (86.5), Cerritos (77.5), San Joaquin Delta (74.0) and Riverside City (73.5), last year’s runner-up, round out the top six. American River (66.0) and Big 8 Conference rival Modesto are tied for seventh, San Diego Mesa (64.0) is eighth and Saddleback (59.0) completes the top 10 which is split evenly between NorCal and SoCal programs.
Colleges are awarded points based on their teams’ final positions in post-conference competition with state championships worth the most points (20). Each college’s top-five men’s and top-five women’s team results count toward the school’s overall point total. Complete standings, scoring criteria, and history of the NATYCAA Cup is available on the CCCAA website, http://cccaasports.org/NATYCAA/index.
Besides competing for the CCCAA title, schools also contend for the Learfield IMG Directors’ Cup against all two-year programs nationally while the Daktronics Cup State Associations is contested between the CCCAA and the Northwest Athletic Conference Athletics (NWAC).
Mt. SAC and Sierra own the top two spots in both of those races while the CCAA occupies five of the top 10 places in the Learfield IMG Directors’ Cup standings and eight of the top 10 in the Daktronics competition. Besides the NWAC, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) is part of the Learfield race.
There are 14 CCCAA Championships remaining in the 2019-20 athletic year: men’s and women’s basketball, women’s badminton, baseball, women’s beach volleyball, men’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s volleyball.
Mt. SAC scored 162 points to win last year’s CCCAA title, edging Riverside City (159.0) and Fresno City (152.0) for top honors. A total of 66 schools have scored points towards this year’s title.
