Julian Edelman, Jon Miller headline College of San Mateo Hall of Fame class
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Two-time Super Bowl winner Julian Edelman and Major League Baseball Hall of Fame announcer Jon Miller are among the 18 inductees for College of San Mateo’s fourth Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018. Tickets to the 6 p.m. dinner event are now available to the public.

Seven players (including Edelman) from CSM’s illustrious 96 seasons of football are on the list, joining past inductees/players Bill Walsh and John Madden
Al Namanny (a Jefferson High grad) who succeeded O.J Simpson as Golden Gate Conference player of the year in 1966; then had an honorable mention All-America career at University of Pacific and played professionally for the Edmonton Eskimos.
Sal Genilla (Aragon) and Mario Ballestrasse (Terra Nova). two of the greatest passers and receivers in JC football history. (See notes below.)
Tony Plummer (Sequoia), an All-America defensive back in 1966 who went onto to star at University of Pacific and in the NFL for the Cardinals, Falcons, and Rams (including the 1974 NFC championship game).
All-state middle linebacker Burt Blackwell (Menlo-Atherton) from CSM’s 1971 conference championship team who later became an all-conference star at San Diego State.
Al Gaspard (Jefferson), all-state tackle in 1976 who went on to an honorable mention All-America career at BYU
Men’s basketball stars and top two all-time scorers
Dennis O’Brien (Sacred Heart, SF), set the CSM single season scoring record (609 points) in 1964-65 and was conference player of the year leading to a Division I career at Utah State.
Owney Williams (Wilson, SF), became CSM’s all-time season (666 points) and career (1,064 points) scoring leader and a 1967 all-state selection; equaled CSM single game record of 37 points.
Three Baseball stars
Steve Bissett (San Mateo HS), 1970 conference player of the year who was a first-round draft pick of the Yankees and was an outstanding hitter during a minor league career.
Leigh Gullette (Carlmont), California CC player of the year in 1978 and later played in the College World Series for Miami; also won a Pan Am Games gold medal with the USA championship team
Mike Mooney (Serra), California CC batting champion and player of the year who was drafted by the Giants in 2003 and excelled in the minor league for nine years.
Softball star Cindy Pacheco (Half Moon Bay), all-state pitcher of the year for 2-time Golden Gate Conference champions (1984 and 1985).
Track & Field state champions
Jennifer Ruff (Sequoia), 2-time state discus champion and then an all-conference thrower at Boise State.
Andrea Pappas Ausmus, 1988 state shot put champion and 3-event NorCal champion; All-American in the shot put at Tennessee.
Kevin Marks, double state champion in the shot put and discus throw in 1989; received a scholarship to University of Washington.
Aquatics star Don Gray (Carlmont), 1966 state swim champion in the 50-yard free (in national record equaling time); also, second-team All-American for CSM’s state runner-up water polo team; later won WAC 50 and 100 free titles at Utah.
Jon Miller, who resides in Moss Beach, began his broadcasting career as a student at CSM, doing football, basketball and baseball games on KCSM, the college’s radio and TV stations, in the early 1970’s. He was the 2010 Ford C. Frick Baseball Hall of Fame award winner for broadcasting excellence He got his first baseball play-by-play job in 1974 at age 22 calling radio and TV for that year’s World Series Champion Oakland Athletics. He was chosen as the first play-by-play announcer on ESPN-TV Sunday Nigh Baseball game of the week in 1990. Miller is entering his 22nd season as the Voice of the Giants locally on KNBR Radio and NBC Bay Area. He has broadcast 16 World Series. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2014.
NOTES
Edelman, the former CSM quarterback out of Woodside High School, has earned CSM’s 17th and 18th Super Bowl rings with the defending NFL champion New England Patriots as the favorite slot receiver for quarterback Tom Brady (who spent much of his career practicing on the CSM football field with his personal coach the late Tom Martinez, a former Bulldogs head coach).
Edelman has been sidelined with an injury during the 2017 season remained in line for a third Super Bowl ring (the 19th for CSM) should his San Mateo compatriot Brady deliver another title. As a freshman option quarterback at CSM Edelman threw for 1,312 yards 14 touchdowns and ran for a school record 1,253 yards and 17 touchdowns. He went onto set passing records at Kent State before being signed by the Patriots.
--Genilla, in 1985, set a national JC single game total offense mark of 616 yards in a game en route to all-time JC season records of 3,555 passing yards and 3,607 total offense yards.
--Ballestrasse followed-up on an all-state season as a freshman, grabbing passes from Genilla, to embark on his own JC record outburst in 1986 -- including a single game mark of 16 receptions for 361 yards. He led the nation that year in receiving yards, all-purpose yards, and receiving touchdowns – including a JC career receiving yards total of 2,391.

Tickets for College of San Mateo’s Fourth Athletics Hall of Fame enshrinement dinner on Friday, February 9 – featuring Julian Edelman and Jon Miller -- are now on sale. The Friday 4 p.m. Hall of Fame Plaza inductee unveiling ceremony (above the college gymnasium) is open to the public, free of charge. A social hour and 6 p.m. dinner will follow at CSM’s spectacular College Center. Dinner tickets are $75.
