2016 Olympic Athletes with California Community College Affiliation
Sacramento, CA . . .The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) is proud to announce participants in this year’s Olympic Games with ties to California Community College athletics. An impressive list was compiled from student athletes to coaches who will be representing the United States and other countries at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The CCCAA has identified 22 coaches & athletes who will be participating in the Olympics beginning Friday, August 5. Many of these Olympians have excelled in or contributed immensely to California Community College athletics by winning multiple State Championships, setting State and National marks, earning All-American status, or sharing their knowledge of the sport through coaching, training, etc. The list consists of well-known athletes such as Olympic Gold track & field star, Brittney Reese, who is currently an Assistant Women’s T&F Coach for San Diego Mesa College. Reese is the only long jumper (man or woman) to win six World Championships (three outdoor and three indoor), earning her sixth gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships. There is also two-time gold medal volleyball coaching legend, Marv Dunphy. Dunphy is a former LA Pierce student-athlete and now Pepperdine University head men’s volleyball coach. He will be making his 7th Olympic appearance (1988-gold medal, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008-gold, 2012, 2016). In addition, there will be returning Olympian and former Moorpark College student-athlete Kibwe Johnson. In 2002 Johnson earned a State title in the hammer throw and broke a school record in the discus after a full season of football with the Moorpark Raiders. In the 2012 London Olympics he made the final and finished 9th. No American had made the final since 1996. Also participating in the summer games is former Irvine Valley student-athlete, Eva Lee. In 2006 Lee won both the singles and doubles badminton state titles and now leads the U.S. team in her second Olympic Games, seeking the country’s first-ever Olympic badminton medal. There’s also current State record holder in three swim events and National record holder in one at the community college level, Ahmed Mathlouthi, from Santa Monica College. Mathlouthi will be competing in the 200m freestyle for his home country, Tunisia, in his second consecutive Olympics appearance.
